For over the past month we have been reading Hatchet, a novel written by Gary Paulsen. After finishing it we were to create a kind of project that would show 5 things we thought contributed greatly to the book. We also had to tell why they were important.

To the side you can see a quick snapshot of my title page, as I decided to do a booklet for this project.

I thought the 5 important things in the book were,
~The Hatchet
~The Plane
~Brian (the main character)

~His Shelter
~The Wilderness.

For our final poetry project our teacher had us choose a way to show our learning for poetry. We had to write a minimum of 3 poetic forms and present. I made 5 stars and had a different poetic device for each star.

Learning Intention: I can create a variety of poems that follow specific forms using poetic devices.

From doing this unit I learned many, many things. I learned how to write different kinds of poetry such as, Haiku, Concrete, Found etc. I learned different things about how to write them, for example a haiku must have 3 lines and the first line has to be 5 syllables the second 7 then the third 5 again. As for concrete the poem has to make up the picture not go around it (take a look at the butterfly in the slideshow for a example) Something else I learned is how to add poetic devices into the poems, (metaphor, rhyme etc.)

I really enjoyed doing this project, it was really fun to try and get as creative as possible. :D
Here is a slideshow of all of the stars and the poems that are on them.

We made these sensory poems. A sensory poem has all the senses so that the reader can fell like he/she is there and in this case eating the food.

What I learned: I learned how to put the poetic devices inside my poem to make it more effective: Soft pasta sliding down my throat like a stream, apposed to soft pasta.

Learning Intention:  I can create poems which use poetic devices and follow specific format.

What I Enjoyed: I enjoyed a lot of things by making this found poem. What I enjoyed most of all was trying to find the words that popped out for you and then realizing what you wanted your poem to be about.

Learning Intention: I can demonstrate my understanding of a variety of poetic devices.

What I learned: From creating this presentation I learned that you can find poetic devices everywhere. I became more clear with the definition for each poetic device, and I figured out how to spot them in the songs I listen to!

Learning Intention: I can use the poetic device of alliteration to make meaning in my writing.

I was walking outside when I looked up and saw a cloudy grey sky and leaves dancing through the air, I also heard the trees rubbing their branches together. One thought came to my mind, It must be fall.

Fall is leaves fluttering down like baby birds. It is going outside to find a swarm of crisp colored leaves, waiting to be piled up. It’s seeing your breathe silently sneak out of you and turn to ice. It is also staying up till one a.m. listening to the bare tree branches smacking against your window.

Fall is sitting on the dark leather couch in my comfy PJ’s warmed by the caged fire. It is watching childhood movies for the first time since I was three. It is playing Family Feud during family game night without even realizing the wind smashing against the window because of all our yowling.

Fall is also baking season. It is mixing the cupcake batter together so fast that you end up with batter everywhere. It is smelling the amazing aroma of apple pie cooling down. Fall is dropping the puffy white marshmallows into the dark brown steaming cup of hot chocolate.

Fall is getting out the large down filled winter coat to stay warm throughout the chilly fall, followed by the drop dead cold winter. Fall is being bundled with toques and scarfs. It is seeing cute fluffy dogs walking around in hats and jackets, while my brother keeps telling me, “dogs shouldn’t wear coats!”

Fall is getting your Halloween costume at the last minute. It is finding the candy you bought three weeks ago, gone like it never even existed. Fall is not going to the pumpkin patch, but instead buying a big plump orange one from Superstore. It is getting out the books and waking up your brain from the 2 month nap during summer.

All of these things remind me of fall. Even though it is cold and rainy fall isn’t a time to be negative it is a time to spend with family and friends and enjoy the beautiful colors of the season.

Learning Intention: I can create a personal piece of writing that uses descriptive language to paint a portrait, starts with a strong leads and focuses on one main idea

What I learned: I learned how to create good sentence variety while writing this piece. Before I would make the same length which sounded quite boring, the sentences were around: 20, 23, 21 which wasn't very good sentence variety but then I changed it to this: 4,16, 25 which sounded much better!

Learning Intention:I can use strategies (visualization) during reading to improve my understanding.

About: Our class is reading the book "the one and only Ivan" and while we were reading our teacher got us to draw down what we saw when she was reading. For example when Ivan drew the pictures and it spelled out HOME I immediately could picture the big letters made of smaller pictures so I drew that. Another example would be the claw stick, I could see it clearly in my mind because of how well the author described it.

Learning Intention:

I can create a poem that follows a specific form and uses creative descriptive language to describe who I am.

What I learned:

I learned how to make a poem , that tells my interests and has a specific format.

In this section I will be posting about
the different things we are doing in
language arts, maybe if some pictures
of different activities.
